Health is shaped not only by medical care but by the everyday conditions in which people live, work, and gather. Baltimore’s public markets, such as Lexington and Cross Street, reveal how place itself can function as a determinant of health. These markets offer fresh food, social connection, and local economic opportunity-key ingredients for community well-being. Yet, uneven access, affordability, and redevelopment pressures reflect deeper inequities that influence who benefits most from these spaces. By analyzing how markets intersect with social determinants of health-such as income, race, neighborhood, and education-this inquiry explores how inclusive, equitable marketplaces can contribute to healthier people and healthier cities.
